Chai Oval is a hand-tufted viscose and linen oval rug by Janice Joostema for Malcusa, made in Europe at 5’11” x 7’3”.
Joostema was born and raised in Vancouver, of Fijian and Dutch descent, and came to design through modelling and then fashion. She describes her aesthetic as neutral but warm, and the rug capsule she made with Malcusa is exactly that — quiet colour, soft geometry, nothing that shouts.
The oval is the point here: it rounds off a room without committing to a full circle, and reads softer than a rectangle at the same footprint. Joostema's rugs are the fastest in the collection — made in Europe rather than India, and ready in about 30 days rather than six to eight weeks.
