Playfully referencing the familiar language of outdoor rock speakers, this bronze-cast speaker domesticates the form of a stone found in the mountains near Mexico City. Reimagined for the interior, it becomes a listening object—situated between sound and sculpture.
The piece draws from a sculptural tradition of “listening” to stone. When carving, it is common practice to press one’s ear against the material while lightly tapping its surface; the resulting vibrations reveal what is hidden from view—internal fractures, density, and structural integrity. This immediate feedback establishes a quiet dialogue between maker and material.
Cast in bronze, the object also nods to a long lineage of sonic experimentation within sculpture. Historically used in the production of bells, cymbals, and other early instruments, bronze has been refined over centuries for its resonant qualities. Here, that legacy is distilled into a compact, contemplative form—an artifact that invites both observation and listening.
