A Sip is a wall-mounted figure in granite and wood by Matt Byrd. A carved stone head sits atop a block of warm, figured hardwood, arms curling around the front to cradle a small cup. Beneath it, a carved granite fish hangs on a short length of chain — a quiet joke about what, exactly, is being drunk.
Byrd is a stone carver with a background in traditional masonry, working from salvaged granite he collects around Raleigh, North Carolina. He cuts each component by hand, and his pieces hold together through friction, joinery and fit rather than adhesive — a habit carried over from dry stone walling.
